Case StudyPublic Affairs: Cuba Study Group

The Challenge

Throughout his 2015 campaign, then-candidate Trump repeatedly claimed he would unilaterally end President Obama’s normalization policy with Cuba.

Insights

The Cuba Study Group should lead a united front of corporate, advocacy, non-profit, and academic stakeholders in demanding President-Elect Trump not make rash policy decisions without a comprehensive federal agency review.

Execution

Over five days, synthesized input from 17 organizations and individuals with often conflicting perspectives and agendas into a consensus letter which was delivered to President-Elect Trump’s Chief of Staff.

Results

Upon taking office in 2016, President Trump did not unilaterally end normalization, but allowed the Departments of State, Commerce, and the Treasury to conduct an official review.
